Galmaemot Catholic Shrine is where five saints, including three French priests, were martyred during the Byeongin Persecution of 1866, when the Catholic persecution was the most severe. Covering an area of 5,500 pyeong, it has a monument for the martyrs, a memorial center, a priest’s office, and a nunnery. It is a famous sacred place drawing 40,000 to 50,000 visitors a year and was designated as a Provincial Monument whose history is related to Chungcheong Suyeongseong Fortress.
